Yep, that’s ice.

The coolest thing in surfing this week.

In keeping with our recent theme of Arctic blogs, in anticipation of our film To The Arctic, here are some stories on Arctic surfing.

In the early days of coldwater surf travel it was a novelty. Numerous trips were made to Alaska and other places, but it always seemed like there was far too much neoprene and far too little quality surf. In the late 1990s, a group of surfers went to Antarctica and surfed a wave breaking along the edge of an iceberg. That was different and cool. Here’s a video.

Gradually, as surfing crowds have pushed farther out, these cold coastlines became more well-traveled, and more evidence of good waves, and good surfers, in these places arose.

With great surf photos coming out of places like Iceland, coldwater surf trips are only slightly lower on the list than tropical surf trips now. Pro surfers like Raph Bruhwiler have built their careers in these chilly outposts.

But a whole blog on Arctic surfing? Come on, I thought, until I saw this.
