For over ten years, marine biologist Nancy Caruso has been restoring the kelp forests of Orange County with the help of 5000 k-12 students and 250 volunteer divers. Read more about this work here. -Ed

Through my work on the Orange County Ocean Restoration Project I have been able to see the return of kelp forests that had been gone for more than 20 years, as well as the growth of awareness about their importance.  Many of the restored areas now lie in the newly established Marine Protected Area in Laguna Beach.

Each year, the project celebrates its accomplishment and ongoing efforts at KelpFest, where we share the importance of protecting our kelp forests.

Please join us Saturday, April the 20th from 9am to 5pm at Laguna Beach's Main Beach for Kelpfest and Earth Day 2013!

Kelpfest will feature great attractions such as: live performances, educational exhibits about giant kelp and California marine life, kayak trips to see the restored kelp forest off Laguna Beach, and much more!

More than 800 species rely on kelp forests, and we are one of them! For more than 20 years, Laguna Beach's kelp forests had declined by as much as 80%. But over the past nine years, thousands of people have worked to restore these critical habitats.

Come learn more about how kelp is used in our everyday life and join us in a celebration of its return to Southern California!
